Week of November 28th

PLEASE NOTE WE WILL BE CLOSED DECEMBER 18th-26th!! You do not need to hold your box – it’s already been done.
I know there’s been a big recall on Romaine lettuce, and even though they aren’t sure the source, they are blaming California for the problem. I can assure you our romaine lettuce is safe for your table. ENJOY 🙂 We are so happy to bring you small farm, organic produce for you and your family. Thanks for supporting what we do.
We originally were going to put baby spinach in all the boxes. The farm was short on labor and couldn’t weed it all in time. We expect to have it in all our boxes next week!

Thanksgiving CSA box

PLEASE NOTE WE WILL BE CLOSED DECEMBER 19-26. You do not need to put your account on hold, we’ve already done it for you. We will back the first week of January to kick off the New Year right.
This year we are raising money for the Lompoc Homeless shelter. Living here in Buellton I’ve realized there is plenty of need for fresh vegetables for our neighbors up in Lompoc. Your donation will help bring them fresh salads through the end of the year. AND we will match any amount of money you’d like to contribute dollar for dollar.
It’s been an odd growing season around the holidays this year. Our beans frosted, our parsley didn’t come up and it’s too warm on the other side to start Brussels sprouts this early. I know those are things we like to have on our holidays tables. But we have PLENTY of fresh, vibrant veggies and will keep you stocked with everything that is good from the farm. I am so thankful for our community and support we receive year round that continues to let us thrive.

Week of November 14th – Holiday Announcements

We WILL BE making CSA boxes next week. If you need to skip your share please log into your account here, click on the “delivery hold” tab and enter the dates you need to skip. The sooner we know the better so we can plan accordingly. I also wanted to mention we will be skipping weeks of December 19th -26th. You do not need to do anything for those weeks, your account has already been placed on hold. We are taking a few weeks to take a break and regroup for the new year. Looking forward to making 2019 the best yet.
We will also be collecting CSA donations for the Lompoc Homeless Shelter this year. Any donations can be deducted from your account and will be matched by us to buy bulk produce for the shelter. They have been trying to provide more fresh produce and we’d love to help them make this happen.
I’ve been reading a lot into Ayurveda recently. I feel like I’m behind the curve. It’s based on two guiding principles: 1) The mind and the body are inextricably connected, and 2) nothing has more power than the mind to heal and transform the body. Ayurveda provides us with the language to explain what our bodies already know. It speaks a lot about the vibration of foods. Just like people and places have a certain vibration, so does food. And freshly picked veggies are the highest and most alkaline of all food. There’s an Ayurvedic proverb that says “When diet is wrong, medicine is of no use. When diet is correct, medicine is of no need.” I am very grateful to be bringing you these healing and nurturing foods. From our farm to your table. Enjoy.

Week of November 7th – REMEMBER TO VOTE

“Vote with your fork” is a common saying in the local food movement. And it’s an act that can have very real impacts for local farmers–we all feel it in a positive way when you vote with your fork and choose local, organic food. But you can do more. You can vote with your voice, too.
Tomorrow, make your actions count double: VOTE with your VOICE and your fork. Because both matter.
We are already starting to plan for our Thanksgiving CSA box on the 21st/22nd. If you are going to be out of town or do not need your box that week please put your share on hold NOW. That would really help us plan for picking.
I will post food photos for the recipes below asap! My photo editor likes to stop working on Monday afternoons :/
Don’t forget the GIFT OF A CSA box for the holidays. We will include a bi-weekly rustic country french bread with your gift of health. You can purchase certificates in our CSA store or send me an email to set it up. Include a plantable card from Green Field Paper for $4 extra.

Week of October 31st

Happiest Halloween to all. Hope these vegetables balance out any sugar intake that may occur 😀 We will be going to sleep early Wednesday night so eat an extra butterfinger for me. I’m not a huge fan of candy, but I can definitely get down with a butterfinger or peanut butter cup on occasion.
The farm has been having a lot of trouble storing onions. We usually grow onions during the summer and then store them in our barn for the year. The weather doesn’t want to cooperate and we’ve up throwing a lot into our compost piles. The heavy fog and damp air cause the onions tend to go moldy or sprout. So I’m loading the CSA boxes with the good onions that remain for as long as I can. Pretty soon they will be gone until next year. So if you find yourself with more onions than you can use, just put them in a dry, dark space until you need them.
We are also quickly going to run out of things like zucchini (our last crop got a bad case of mildew), tomatoes and red bell peppers. This is why we are having a repeat this week of some familiar things.

Week of October 17th

We are sneaking one more week of melons into the CSA box. Enjoy these super fresh, vine ripened, unlike anything you can buy in the store – cantaloupes. I tend to cringe when I see those slices of melon in the store. The ones that are pre-cut and tucked away into plastic containers. They look like melon, might even smell like melon, but they are far from tasting like the real thing. Enjoy these final bites of summer.
A heads up about the basil. We will be picking it Wednesday morning, but basil is very fickle and will wilt in an instant. To keep basil fresh, trim the stems and place them in a glass or jar of water, just like cut flowers. It does best at room temperature, so no need to put it in the fridge.

Week of October 10th

I’ve been cooking a lot with the cippolini onions. They are so sweet and tender when you cook them down. It can be as simple as frying them in some oil/butter/ghee for 5-10 minutes until translucent and golden brown and then cracking a few eggs over them for breakfast.
When you get your cilantro, snip off the ends, remove the twist tie and put them in a glass of water. Make sure to change the water every other day and consume the bunch within 5 days. A great way to use a whole bunch of cilantro is in a dressing. Cut off the stalks to the cilantro and put in a blender with a few cloves of garlic, lemon, salt and pepper, a little honey or maple syrup and a few big glugs of good olive oil. Whizz it up and enjoy over roasted veggies or a big salad. It’s that easy to boost your nutritional value and get some serious detoxification benefits as well.

Week of October 3rd – Seasons are Changing

I can’t believe it’s already October, but I can definitely feel the crispness to the air up here in Buellton. And with that chill comes a startling halt to a lot of warm weather crops. Keep an eye on the blog as it may change with what we can actually pick this week. If we get melons it will definitely be the last week for them.
I listen to a lot of health related podcasts to keep up on the latest findings in health. I always knew it was important to eat a variety of vegetables to get the most diverse nutrients, but I recently learned that one key facet of good gut health that is a fairly new discovery — is eating an ample and diverse amount of produce. It is a key to healthy gut function because of its influence on gut bacteria. I find when I go to the store I tend to buy the same things, so it’s cool to have such a variety of things in our CSA boxes every week.
And my last note is for broccoli. I’ve been reading and hearing so many amazing detoxification benefits that this vegetable provides. Researchers at Johns Hopkins University’s School of Medicine found that broccoli contains a potent sulphur-containing chemical called sulforaphane that can turn on our genes and cause them to produce both antioxidant, and detoxification enzymes. When we eat raw broccoli, our chewing enables the release of an enzyme, myrosinase, which is trapped in the cell walls of this plant. Eating the vegetables raw, or lightly steamed is best, as it will preserve the enzyme activity, and having healthy bacteria in your intestines will help as well. Check out a recipe below for a delicious raw broccoli salad. I tried it and my whole family enjoyed it!
