Did you know tomatoes and onions are best stored on your counter top? If you slice into them, you can put them in an air tight container in the fridge, but it’s best to consumer them as soon as you can. Enjoy.

Week of July 25th

When watermelon and corn collide I feel like summer has truly arrived. Please note that you most likely will find a worm in each ear of corn. These worms are harmless and can be tossed in your yard for some lucky bird to find. It’s best to discard of the worm as soon as possible so they don’t continue to eat the corn. I feel lucky to be able to offer organic corn. Companies like Bayer and Monsanto are HUGE into Genetically Engineered Corn, touting that it will use less pesticides than normal conventional corn, but pollinators are still taking a big hit. Corn is far from the only crop treated by chemicals, insecticides and fungicides, but it is the largest use of arable land in North America, and pollinators like honey bees rely on corn as a major protein source. Check out Panna.org for more information. If you aren’t outraged you don’t have enough information. Thanks for continuing to support organic food and a healthy open space for bees to do their magic.
The watermelon you receive will be ripe and ready to go. We have a watermelon whisperer on staff who is picking it especially for you 🙂 Watermelon is mostly water, combined with an honorable fiber content. This combination fills you up and leaves you satisfied longer than any sugary, fat laden dessert. And with these hot days, it sure feels great to sink your teeth into a slice of cold melon.

Week of July 11th

In the wake of disaster I was left to realize with a reminder of how overwhelmingly amazing our community is. I live up in Buellton, but after a fire burned through the Givens’ 25 year old home in Goleta this past week, people reached out from every nook and cranny of my life to make sure that we were taken care of. And we are. It will take a long time to rebuild what was lost and obviously not everything can be replaced, but it’s most important that our family is still together. We just need to keep going, as the farm work does not stop for anyone, and focus on keeping our community healthy and vibrant. We look forward to continuing to nourish you guys as you do everyday for me with your positivity and resilience. Thank you for being a part of our CSA program, continuing to support us at the farmers market and your local grocery store. We couldn’t do this without you.
We ended up with an abundance of basil this week on the farm. I thought it would go perfect with the eggplant and tomatoes in the box. Make sure to keep basil cool and dry to prevent it from wilting. We will pick it Wednesday morning to help ensure vibrancy when you receive it.

Week of July 4th

As we celebrate America and this phenomenal country of ours, it is a reminder to celebrate the people behind the scenes that make our country so great. Migrants and immigrants make America great because they made America. I personally, am deeply appreciative to all our workers that labor SEVEN days a week, without rest and show up every single day rain or shine. They represent the many sons and daughters of immigrants to whom we should be thankful — not only those who work in our fields, construction sites, kitchens and bathrooms but also those in the corridors and labs in our hospitals. I TRUELY believe that immigration is the cornerstone of what makes this country so prolific.
As we are enjoying all the abundance in our lives, let’s stop and celebrate our many cultures, races and all our differences. Most of us are descended from migrants and refugees and immigrants. This is who we are as Americans. And the best measures of our greatness are found in a history of respecting diversity as a source of strength.
