Week of October 30th

The last of our red onions are going into these CSA boxes. The great thing about onions is that they store quite well. Place them in a dark, cool area and they should last for a few months if needed. Summertime is quickly fading away as the temperatures drop to almost freezing temperatures in parts of SB county during the night. We are heading right into the holiday season. Don’t forget to give the Gift of Health over the holidays. We offer gift certificates in all amounts over a 2 box subscription. Gift at least $100 and receive a $10 credit to your account. Contact me to mail out certificates or email a recipient directly.
We will be putting boxes together the day before Thanksgiving on November 27th. Please put your account on hold as soon as possible if you would not like to receive one so we can plan accordingly. We are taking the weeks of December 25th – Jan 1st off and are NOT preparing boxes those weeks. You do not need to make any adjustments to your account. It’s already been done for you. THANK YOU!

Week of October 23rd

As we transition from summer into fall we lose a lot of that sweet fruit as we wait (not so patiently) for the fall/winter fruit to ripen. I think I can speak for most when I say how much we love fruit. Three years ago my husband and I started our orchard in our back yard because I’ve always had a difficult time finding local organic fruit. Just a few days ago we’ve decided to expand the orchard by about 500 trees. We are growing it all! Your support of our CSA program has allowed us to follow our dreams and in return we promise all the fruit!! In the mean time we will do our best to work with what’s available here in SB County.
I hope you enjoy the kabocha squash in this week’s box. For anyone who has never had one you are in for a real treat. Pumpkin has nothing on kabocha squash and it can sub in anywhere butternut or pumpkin is called for. I think it’s the sweetest winter squash grown, with a rich velvety texture and beautiful golden flesh.

October 15, 2019

Hello community. Last week on October 3rd we welcomed our new baby into the world. It was a bit earlier than we had anticipated and we are definitely still catching up. Excuse my shorter than usual blog posts as I scrounge for some sleep in my free time. Baby Seth Givens and momma are doing great and hibernating at home on the farm. Special thanks to the crew who is making it all happen in my absence.
We are also missing a usual suspect from our CSA box this week. In order to get carrots into the boxes on a weekly basis we are planting them every six weeks and things need to roll right on schedule. Seen as farming is anything but on schedule, the carrots haven’t had a chance to size up. This week we are checking out the rainbow carrot variety picked right here in SB County. Lots of love and veggies from the Givens family.

Week of October 9th

We always have recipes to share and inspire, but this week got a little too crazy so this post is a short one. It will probably be the only blog without recipes so I’m hoping you will get on social media and share what you are eating to help inspire all around you.
Heirloom tomatoes, spinach, salad mix and green beans come from our friends at Sunrise Organic Farm. The family that runs this farm started off on John Givens Farm and has branched out to pave their own path and make even more vegetables available to our community to eat. We love supporting him because they represent the quality and taste we’ve grown to love over the years and they just feel like family.
